  • Characteristics of Sustainable Farmers:
      - The survey is a collection of data on the operations and organization of farmers’ markets in parts of the Mid-Atlantic region. By studying this report, those working with farmers’ markets can help to ensure better and more efficient operation of producer-only farmers’ markets, and help to enhance the survival of our local farms and the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables they produce.

  • Community Supported Agriculture in the Mid-Atlantic
    - Results of a Shareholder Survey and Farmer Interviews
    :
      - Community supported agriculture (CSA) is an important alternative marketing approach for many small farms in the Mid-Atlantic region. However, there are many challenges to making a CSA successful; satisfying and retaining members is only one of these. This study, focused on CSA operations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, joins other recent analytical work that examines key issues for CSA farmers and shareholder retention. It also provides one of the first studies of CSA farms in the Mid-Atlantic states.

  • Land-Based Apprenticeships for Small Farms: Experiences at Accokeek Foundation's Ecosystem Farm 1996 to 2004:
      -  The Ecosystem Farm's Jean Wallace Douglas Center for Land-Based Training supports young farmers and teaches them strategies for earning a living wage from their work. This report presents a training philosophy and includes comments and follow up remarks from apprentices who have completed the program.

      - A high tunnel is a simple, inexpensive, and highly versatile structure similar to a greenhouse. With good planning, variety selection, knowledge of market demand and close management, this low cost system can add another dimension to a vegetable or small fruit operation.

      -  A grant funded publication adapted from educational material developed by the Pennsylvania Vegetable Marketing and Research Program. This guide was put together by John Berry, an Agricultural Marketing Agent from Penn State Cooperative Extension.
