"MCE Small Farm and Forest Focus Team"
The Teaching Materials Resource List below contains teaching materials submitted to the Small Farm and Forest Focus Team for peer review and listing. The intent of this list is to make teaching materials developed by MCE Educators available to all MCE Educators. This will provide all MCE Educators more opportunities to teach a wider range of subject matter classes and also more opportunities for scholarship by sharing their teaching materials. Each listing below includes the name of the author and a description of the teaching material. If you have a question about a presentation, please contact the author. 1) "Ag 101: Introductory Small Farm Class"

Includes: The program contains three scripted PowerPoint slide programs, UMCP, MCE Fact Sheet 781 "Guidelines for Selecting Farmland" and MCE, Frederick County Fact Sheet 21 "Basic Agricultural Glossary: Livestock and Pasture". The slide programs include "Ag 101" (38-slides), "10 Commandments of Leadership" (12-slides), and "Glossary Quiz of Basic Agricultural Terms" (21-slides).
Presentation Description: This class can serve as the introductory class to a small farm educational program series. The enclosed materials are designed to help the educator and the class participants to bond in the first class (ice-breaker) with a light-hearted look at agriculture, which can lay the foundation for a positive future relationship. The introductory materials in PowerPoint can easily be modified and updated to fit the goals and county data of the educator.

Presentation Description: This material would be an excellent choice to use as a follow-up (second class) to the introductory class in a small farm series. Soil and plant fertility should be the first "subject matter" course, because understanding this material forms the basis of other Ag-related subjects and is a true fundamental necessity for successful farming. This program is designed as a two-hour class and can also be used in Nutrient Applicators Voucher Training. Participants in this class are eligible to receive credit for voucher training.

Presentation Description: This is a 30-minute program that is appropriate for all audiences. This program was originally developed as part of a natural resources program for 4-H Camp. The use of color slides, animation, sound effects, and an interactive approach to understanding more about snakes, how to identify some of the more common snakes in our area, and dispelling some of the myths about snakes, is effective at retaining the attention of young audiences.
